Description
Music and Dance in the times of the Duchess of Alba (1772-1812), 2012
"Music in the time of the Duchess of Alba (1762-1802)" is both a formal concert and an educational outreach presentation with bi-lingual narration, song and dance. The program seeks to incite interest in the 18th century Spanish painter Francisco Goya by telling the story of the historical figure of the Duchess of Alba. The one hour and 15 minute presentation is with classical guitarist, a period costumed Spanish classical dancer and classical, and centers around the historical figure of the Duchess of Alba, María del Pilar Cayetana de Silva-Álvarez de Toledo (1762-1802); this colorful and well known personality of the royal court of late 18th century Spain was closely associated with the painter Francisco José Goya y Lucientes (1746-1828); a portrait of the Duchess painted by Goya currently hangs in the front gallery of the Hispanic Society of America, and is one of the hallmarks of the Society's collection; this painting, “La duquesa de Alba (1797)” together with an important collection of Goya's works at the Society, sadly remain mostly unknown. The bi-lingual spoken narrative about the life of the Duchess, with songs accompanied by guitar and dancer with castanets will include works by the composers Fernando Sor, Manuel García, Pablo Huertos, Ramon Carnicer and Federico Moretti.
